My brilliant Granddad, George Beswick was born in the  East Yorkshire village of Burton Fleming in 1916.

In January 1940 he was  drafted into the Royal Army Medical Core (RAMC).

George William Beswick, 1941

The 6th August 1940 saw  George and his comrades of the 15th Casualty Clearing Station (15CCS) sail from Gourock in Scotland aboard the Troopship Franconia.  They were heading for Egypt,  a trip which would take them 7 weeks and see them visit  Freetown, Cape Town and Durban in South Africa before arriving in Egypt on 30th September 1940.

I remember him, enjoying his retirement whilst recording his memories in poems and collecting together old photographs, his way of remembering and honouring.

I thought it would be fitting to show some of these photos here; taken by unknown photographers who were documenting their WW2 story.

Bath time!

  1. Interesting pics of the desert - the war in North Africa an interest of mine. I believe the hospital facilities were transferred to caves to be out of the way of bombs and shells, etc. Also those daft desert hats weren't worn for long

  2. Thanks, have loads more. If you want to see them I can email you some. Did not know about the caves - will have to look into that; sounds like it would have been a good idea tho.
